Responsible Pet Owners Month

February is Responsible Pet Owners Month!

Here at Howls & Prowls we like to promote responsible pet ownership and have dedicated this blog post to ways that you can ensure that you are responsible pet people (which I’m sure you are!)

There are many things as dog owners that we can do to ensure that we are as responsible in the care of our furry friends as we can be; these are things you’re likely doing everyday from ensuring your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times, is getting a good and balanced diet and cleaning up their mess when out on walks (and disposing of those poo bags properly, not just leaving them hanging on branches etc).

Microchip check

Other ways to ensure responsibility would include checking your pets microchip is up to date and working as it should be. Since the pandemic dog theft has been on the rise, give your dog the best chance of getting back home by checking that all your details on their microchip are up to date and the chip is in working order. Ensure that their tag is up to date and equipment like collars, leads and harnesses are all in good condition and don’t need replacing.

Howls & Prowls have also teamed up with Pet24, a fantastic 24/7 service that offer vital support if your pet should ever go missing. They will pay up to £1,000 for emergency vet treatment if your dog is found injured, and Pet24 takes responsibility for the quick and safe return of your pet 24 hours a day. Sign up today with the Howls & Prowls link and receive a 20% discount on your first year of Pet24 membership.

Vaccinations

Are you up to date with your dogs vaccinations, flea and worming treatment? If this has been on your to do list make February the month you make sure that your pet is all up to date and protected - speak with your veterinarian who would be happy to advise.

Diet

Your dogs diet - not all dog foods are created the same. The names of the top three manufacturers in terms of sales may surprise you. They are Mars (yep, the chocolate Mars), Nestle and Colgate Palmolive - not names you would expect to hear when it comes to nutritious dog food. Check the nutritional rating of your dogs food on the All About Dog Food website and find out more about changing your dogs food to a balanced, healthy and appropriate diet.

Nervous Dogs

Do you have a nervous dog? If you answered yes to this then take a look at My Anxious Dog! An award winning range of yellow, space awareness products designed with anxious and reactive dogs in mind. As a Howls & Prowls customer, use code HOWLS&PROWLS at the checkout!

Enrichment

There are many ways that we can enrich our dogs lives beyond just taking them out for a walk. Little sessions of training while waiting for the kettle to boil for instance is great enrichment for our canine companions as well as fun for us as well. Playing find it, hide and seek and other such games are not only fun, but also help reinforce practical training skills that are important in any owner/dog repertoire.

How you feed your dog can also be an enriching experience for them; feeder toys, puzzles, Kong and even just a rolled up towel with the dogs food in can make a different to a dogs day. Give Carboard Chaos a go, put that recycling to good use and let your dog sniff out their food and destroy the recycling while their at it - let’s face it, you needed the help to fit it all in the bin anyway! :D

We aren’t just enriching the dog’s lives but also our bond with our dogs.

Little things make a big difference and we would love to see the interesting ways you are making your dogs lives better. Please drop us a comment and a photo on our Facebook page and show the world how much of a responsible dog owner you are!

Lots of woof from the Howls & Prowls team
